Malcolm Campbell's grandson sets sights on record
Don Wales, the Addlestone-based grandson speedster Sir Malcolm Campbell, is hoping to break the record for the world's fastest steam powered car.
The team behind the 27 foot car, which has taken nine years to build, have started preliminary tests to make sure of the car's acceleration, it's stopping and it's coordination.
The run throughs that started in November in Newtown Park, Lymington, are the first initial tests.
Don, from Weston Avenue, and his team are hoping to smash the old world record, which was set at 127mph in 1906, and hope that the car can reach 200mph.
The planned location for the final run is the Edwards Air Force Base in California, due to it's dry atmosphere.
Although a final run has not been confirmed, the team hope to complete the record breaking attempt in the first half of 2009.
